The creation of AlphaGo truly is a breakthrough in Artificial Intelligence. The documentary of AlphaGo versus Lee Sedol, a professional Go player, is breath taking in every way. It gave me a mixed of emotions; glad that we are reaching the level wherein, us, humans are able to create a program that can mimic human intuition but at the same time, unhappy about that possibility of a program overcoming human minds.
Despite the fairly good performances of AlphaGo in the entire game, we noticed some moves that looked strange in which human minds can assume as mistakes but upon further analyzing, it is in fact strategically creative moves. We call it the move 37, the game changer. At some points of the game, we also notice the slack moves or the moves that AlphaGo did that are unnecessary but this leads to the one-time victory of Lee Sedol. This win gave back my confidence to human race, it feels like I won the game as well.
We can say that AlphaGo’s algorithm does not care about the moves, thus the weird moves it made, but rather by winning for a matter of 1 point against the opponent.
It may sound like a threat to the human race but it is still in the hands of the human to make sure that innovation is responsible and ethical. As the AlphaGo Team said during the interview, “After all, the creation of AlphaGo is a part of human endeavor and a significant step towards the ultimate goal”.
